Reasons Why You should Read Stoker & Holmes by Colleen Gleason

Greetings Earthling! Today I’m telling you why you need to read the Stoker & Holmes series by Colleen Gleason! These books have honestly become of my favorite things ever. I have now placed them on my favorite series list because they are that good!

What is this series about?

This is a Young Adult steampunk series that takes place in London, 1889 and follows Alvermina ‘Mina’ Holmes, the niece of Sherlock Holmes, and Evaline Stoker, the sister of Bram Stoker and is also a vampire hunter. Together they try to solve mysteries and stop supernatural things from happening. It is wonderful, amazing, and so much find to read.

Evaline Stoker and Mina Holmes never meant to get into the family business. But when you’re the sister of Bram and the niece of Sherlock, vampire hunting and mystery solving are in your blood. And when two society girls go missing, there’s no one more qualified to investigate.

Now fierce Evaline and logical Mina must resolve their rivalry, navigate the advances of not just one but three mysterious gentlemen, and solve murder with only one clue: a strange Egyptian scarab. The stakes are high. If Stoker and Holmes don’t unravel why the belles of London society are in such danger, they’ll become the next victims.

I’ve been in love with this series for a while and I want others to read it so here are all my reasons for why I think you should read it.

1. It follows Mina Holmes who is Sherlock Holmes’ niece. I love her and I will protect her with my life.

2. It also follows Evaline Stoker who is the sister of Bram Stoke and she is a vampire hunter. She is basically Buffy and deserves to be loved!

3. It’s a steampunk novel that takes place in London, 1889 which is so cool

4. It had two badass female leads who fight together and not against the other

5. Each book has its own mystery but they are connected and wonderful and it’s soooo good!

6. Then there is Ambrose Grayling (my boyfriend) who I love and is amazing and stands up Mina!

7. Then we got Dylan aka my cinnamon roll

8. Other characters from Sherlock appear and even Bram Stoker

9. The books will leave gasping for air and begging for the next book

10. Colleen Gleason’s writing is fabulous! She not only makes you fall in love with two wonderful leading ladies but she is never predictable with her stories

Screaming because EMOTIONS and a whole lot of Buffy references | The Carnelian Crow by Colleen Gleason

Greetings Earthlings! Today I’m reviewing The Carnelian Crow by Colleen Gleason, the fourth book in the Stoker and Holmes series!

Rating: -A: Good story with characters that got better and a slow plot line

Oh my god! GUYS THIS BOOK LIKE I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO STARTED! I’ll start like this hi I’m Grace and earlier in the year I read this first three books in the Stoker and Holmes series by Colleen Gleason and I loved them. If you would like to hear my full thoughts on them then click right here to read the review. I was so excited for this book because the third book was so great and I love this series. The book follows Evaline Stoker, the sister of Bram Stoker, and Mina Holmes, the niece of Sherlock Holmes, and they are back at it solving crimes together and it’s amazing but at the same time this book fucked me and it fucked me up hard.

So I’m just jumping right to thing I want to talk first which was that I was right that we weren’t going to see the last Dylan! He pops up in the last chapter and I don’t get me wrong I was happy to see him but through out the book we are given all this development with Grayling and Mina’s relationship like in the beginning of the other books she calls him her nemesis but she doesn’t and they start began friends and IM LOVING IT!

I became accustomed to the feel of his leg brushing against my skirt, and I discovered I rather enjoyed the slight movement of the muscles in his arm beneath my hand.”

When I read that quote I was just dying because I ship them so much and Ambrose really likes her. He evens asks if she can start calling him by her name and I was hoping for them to kiss or start dating which the dating thing because he asks her out to the ball thing and I was facing palming when Mina was like what case are we going to solve by going to this ball and he is just like um.. we aren’t I asked because I wanted you to go with because I thought it would be nice.

Case. Right. Er…Miss Holmes, I regret to inform you that…och, well…that I had no particular case in mind to investigate tonight. I merely—that is to say—I merely thought it would be pleasant to attend the Yule Fête. With—er you .”

I blinked.

And suddenly, just as my bedchamber had seemed to shrink in size when he’d gone in to investigate the crow markings outside my window, so did the interior of the carriage all at once become much smaller.

Not in an uncomfortable way, but in a very… aware sort of way. A strangely pleasant way .

“I see . I -”

He rushed on, “I do hope you aren’t disappointed, Miss Holmes .”

“No. No, no, no, I’m not disappointed,” I said quickly, aware that my face had become undeniably warmer. I certainly hoped he couldn’t see what surely must be a bright red tint in my cheeks. “Not at all .”

“I’m relieved to hear that.” He hesitated, then continued, “After all, we had discussed perhaps meeting at the British Museum to take in the Japanese woodprint exhibit. And when Lady Cosgrove-Pitt insisted I attend the fête tonight, I…well, I thought of you.”

Now my cheeks felt as if they were on fire, and I shifted on the bench seat in an effort to move out of the small circle of light so as to hide the glow beneath my skin. Though it was so bright he probably could see it in the dark. “I am most obliged, Inspector.”

Oh Mina you are so smart but so obvious when it comes to man. Yeah so as I was saying I like Dylan. He is a good character, a big cinnamon roll, and he also cares about Mina but I can’t see them together. I talked about this in my last review for the three books, I don’t what them together because I don’t think that they are a good match for each other and I think Ambrose and Mina are a great pair and that really shows in this book as they work together and make something really great. But then Dylan comes back and he comes back because 2016 isn’t the same as it was before and he had to come back. I was happy to see him but at the same time I was like no. Dylan baby I love you but you couldn’t have come at a worst time.

Now let’s talk about my baby girl Evaline who is basically Buffy in Steampunk 1890s. I’m sad to say that #giveevalinelove2017 has failed. Evaline had such a sad storyline, I mean it wasn’t the sad I mean just the impact it had on her and the fact that she deserves real love makes it sad. So after the whole saying that if it came to then Evaline would kill Pix and then she hasn’t heard from him and then suddenly her sister in law Florence says that because of finances and Bram working on his novel that Evaline can return home to Ireland or she has to get married.

Evaline,” she began in a hard, impersonal voice. “It’s…it’s more than that. We… Well, Bram has been spending so much extra time working on his novel that he’s neglected our finances. Even worse, some of his investments weren’t very smart, and with the change in laws and taxes and tariffs…well, things are dire. So dire, in fact, that by the first of the year, we will be faced with two choices: go back to Ireland and move in with your parents, or…” She hesitated, then rushed on. “Or you must marry.”

Evaline is just like how ever heard of a vampire hunter getting married and I’m like no one.

It was part of my heritage. Part of my history.

I couldn’t…

But I couldn’t get married, either.

Whoever heard of a vampire hunter getting married?”

Normal girls marry vampires and Evaline isn’t a normal girl, she’s like Buffy and Buffy never married anyone. Also I’m thinking Pix is more her Spike then her Angel. I’m not saying that’s my official opinion but that’s what I’m leaning towards right now.

Evaline starts looking for suitors and she mets this guy named Ned *what a basic ass name but she still holds a torch for Pix and I feel so bad for this because I have a bad feeling that my baby is going to be alone. Buffy ended up alone and that’s because being a vampire hunter is no easy life. She gets engaged to this Ned guy and the what do you know Pix finally returns! I think it’s weird that I finally like Pix and then suddenly he has such a small part in this book. WHY?!?!?!

The book has kind of a sad ending as Dylan and Miss. Alder return yeah she was missing the whole book until the end. Then Ambrose arrests Pix because there was a death and he’s been accused of doing it and both Ambrose and Pix seem so sad because Evaline is getting married and Dylan has returned and he knows that Mina and him like each other and their both upset and I’m like no please don’t have them get all this development and then abandoned it! Please Colleen Gleason! DON’T DO THIS TO ME!! PLEASE DON’T DO THIS!!

Neither of them gave us a backward glance.”

Even though I loved this book, unfortunately there were two things I didn’t really like. For one the writing style seemed different for some reason and I don’t know it really enjoy that and for some reason it has like future Mina and Evaline like interrupting the story and I didn’t remember that happening before. Did I just miss that before in the last three books or is that new? I don’t know I thought it was weird. Also for some reason the feel of the book didn’t feel the same to me. It’s probably because Evaline and Mina aren’t together a lot and that made me upset because they are such a great team together.

Other than that I enjoyed this book a lot and I’m so sad that this series is coming to an end. We only have one more book! I DON’T WANT IT TO END! AND CAN MINA AND GRAYLING GET TOGETHER IN THE NEXT BOOK? AND CAN #GIVEEVALINELOVE2017 A THING? I’m excited for book five and I can’t wait to see how Colleen Gleason wraps the series up. I think I’m going to have to post more then once a week for a while because I have so much to do! Also I have a poll on Twitter for my next book of the month so please go vote on that. The choices are between the Handmaid’s Tale and Still Star-Crossed which is winning. Have you guys read this book? What did you think of it? Did you like or did you hate it? Steampunk Vampire Hunting, Solving Mysteries, & Badass Female Leads | Stoker & Holmes book 1-3 by Colleen Gleason review

Greetings Earthlings! Today I’m reviewing the first three books in the Stoker & Holmes series by Colleen Gleason.

Rating: Rating: + A: Perfect show with get characters and fantastic plot line.

Tonight, I ask, on behalf of Her Royal Highness, the Princess of Wales: will you do what no other young women are called to do, and place your lives and honor at the feet of your country?

I haven’t done a series review in awhile so this should be fun. At first I just wanted to do a review of each book in the series but I just kept reading these book right after the next because they are just so much fun to read and I loved them! I first heard about the first book Clockwork Scarab in one of PolandBananas haul and I was just like what this book sounds amazing! I have always loved Sherlock and stuff about vampires and hunting them and females leads so I knew that it was the book for me.

If you didn’t know these books follow two girls who are Evaline Stoker *who is basically buffy and Alvermina ‘Mina’ Holmes and now you are thinking hey those names seem familiar. Well that is because Mina is the niece of Sherlock Holmes and the daughter of Mycroft Holmes and Evaline is the sister of Bram Stoker you know the guy that wrote Dracula. They are two completely different girls with Evaline being social, small, and is destined to hunt vampires while Mina isn’t very social, is tall, and very smart. These two come together and solves crimes and it’s so much fun.

Each book have a different mystery but it’s somehow connected to one big giant mystery. So every time the book ends the mystery for the book is solved but another one opens  then we go to the next book. I’ve spent like a whole week reading these books and  I loved them they were so much fun to read. These books are steampunk books that took place in London 1890 so there are a couple difference like they fact that they don’t have electricity but it makes way for awesome outfits.

There are so many good parts of these story one of them being the characters. Each and everyone of them are different in so many ways. I love Mina and Evaline they are such great female leads. They are just so badass in their own way with Mina’s brains and Evaline’s kickass vampire hunting they are just so great. They go through so many adventures together and have this great friendship. They just get each other like Evaline clears knows that something is happening between Grayling and Mina so she teases her about. They both just drag each on adventures and just #hashtagfriendshipgoals.

Another one of my favorite characters is Inspector Ambrose Grayling. He has freckles and has a slight Scottish accent and him and Mina better get together because there is so chemistry between them! In the second book Mina tries to go after a thief and she gets thrown into the river and because she’s wearing a corset she starts drowning and then Grayling comes and saves her and rips open her corset *you know like in pirates of the caribbean. There was so much intense in that scene and when everyone is like judging her from trying to go after that guy he stands up with for her.

Oh yeah so there is sort of a love triangle thing between Mina, Grayling, and another boy named Dylan  who is from the year 2016 and time travelled to the 1890s. Mina and Dylan take a liking towards each other and I was just like no what? Don’t get me wrong I love Dylan he is a little cinnamon roll and just wants to help people but thing is that I don’t think that Mina needs a cinnamon roll, I think she needs someone like Grayling who is as smart and gets her. Dylan and Mina do kiss though and then they never talk about it again but Mina thinks about a lot. One problem is that Mina is completely  oblivious about how both men feel about her and I’m just like girl who can you be some smart and not know these things.

Evaline also has some love with this guy named Pix who I can’t ever understand what he is saying for the life of god. So here is a sentence that I think fits and it’s Evaline is basically Buffy and Pix is like her Spike or her Angel. Basically their relationship is COMPLICATED!! Evaline is too good for the world and Pix just keeps messing with her. He keeps kissing her but then he just ditches her and other stuff happens. Their relationship is him sending her and Mina on trails and then something happens and then they kiss and then she sees him with other girl.

At the end of Chess Queen Enigma two things happen and I had so much anxiety! I had so much anxiety read that whole one I honestly like that one is my favorite so far. So after all the stuff that happens in this book, they find a way to send Dylan back to 2016. The whole time I was just hyperventilating like what the hell is go to happen next. Dylan before he leaves asks Mina if he’ll come with her and then I was just freaking out and I was in class when I was reading this so my friend was just like ‘G what’s wrong?’ and a couple people gave me weird looks. Mina says no which didn’t surprise me because she’s independent woman also you know her whole family is there. I don’t think that we have seen the last of Dylan though. Then Evaline mets Pix and then he asks her if she would have killed him and she goes yes and I’m freaking out because the Buffy parallels are just making me feel!!!

One thing that I think about both relationships and that ending. One Evaline had two guys in third book one got turned into a vampire and the other is still Pix and he just keeps leading her on. Well it seems like he is leading her on to me because he keeps kissing her and hanging out with this other chick. Evaline needs hugs and someone to love her so I’m just saying that Pix better step up his game in the next book or I will kill him *#giveevalinelove2017.Two I think that Mina and Dylan liked each other but only because they met new people and they liked the idea of that. I think if they really liked each other then he would have stayed or she would have gone with him but that’s just my opinion and I don’t ship them so.

If you are wondering any over characters from Sherlock or Bram Stoker appear they do! The person that brings Evaline and Mina together is Irene Adler aka the Woman which I thought was coolest thing ever! She reappears through out the books and is like the girls boss. Sherlock and Watson appear every once and awhile at some of the most awkward moments but it’s still cool that they where there. Bram also makes couple appearances and he was pretty funny. You are probably thinking that Mycroft is in this books a lot but he doesn’t show up until book three because he works all the time. Either girls don’t really have any parents around like Evaline has Bram and his wife but not really anyone else and Mina’s mom left and Mycroft is never around and when he shows up in the third book it was like so cold and she calls him sir and I like half expect there to be a show down between the two.

It didn’t happen but I half expect to though. That’s really sad now that I think about them not having parents. At the end of the second book we found out that Mina’s mother was actually Evaline’s trainer and then the book just ends and I started freaking out. Then the wifi at my house went down so I couldn’t go out get the next book and I got really upset and I tweeted about and Colleen Gleason liked it. That was cool!

Evaline and Mina are both such stronger female leads and I just want to protect them. When Evaline got attacked by that Richard guy who lets be honest was pretty shady because he just kept asking her to dance and I was just like dude she said no. Anyway so he just attacked her and I was just like my child what happening will you live? LIVE LIVE FOR ME!!!!!! But it was okay she lived and I only suffered a heart attack and Grayling found out vampires so it all good I guess.

I really enjoyed these books they are just so much fun. You guys need to read these books because they are just amazing! I need book number four right now seriously I need it right now! I already miss these characters  and I just need to know what happens next! Book four is called the Carnelian Crow and according to goodreads it should be coming out this year hopefully that is true because I NEED IT!

These books are just the greatest maybe one of my favorites this year. Have you guys read these books? If you have did you love them as much I do? I hope you guys enjoy this review and are following my book club here and other social media links. Like, Comment, and follow for more rants like these!
